Who is counted: UMR lists clinicians individually: 89% of the 2,027,240 provider IDs (NPIs) it names are individual doctors, nurse practitioners and therapists; the rest are practices, clinics and hospitals. “Providers” counts those IDs. UMR’s files name 1,463,431 providers for this procedure; 682,020 are counted here: the clinicians whose specialty performs it — mostly Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant and Internal Medicine — and the practices, clinics and hospitals. Insurers attach their whole fee schedule to every contracted provider, so the rest are clinicians listed at a price for something they never do; counting them would inflate the provider count and pull the typical price towards the fee schedule’s floor.
Not on this map: Prices found in only some copies of a network: these files repeat themselves heavily, so each group of nearly identical files was read once, through one of its files. Checks on the largest groups found their files share 98-100% of their prices; the rest, typically 1-2%, is not shown.
